NEGOTIATIONS - A TRUE CASE
The Promise – Anytime a union is attempting to gain support they can tell you almost anything to get that support, including that they will get you significantly more in pay and benefits.
The Fact – Once a union and the company negotiate a contract, the employees make get more, they may get the same or they can get less.
Below are the actual results of negotiations that recently took place between the Union and three (3) of Beacon’s NRT locations in Massachusetts.
Ask yourself if they came out better, the same, or worse?
NRT – Westborough
- After seventeen (17) months of negotiations, the employees of Westborough petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to hold a decertification election of Union Local 170 at the Westborough location.
- After a nearly 100% participation rate in the decertification election, the Westborough employees elected to kick Union Local 170 out and remain a union-free location.
NRT – Marlborough
- No increases in pay and three (3) year pay freezes for all CDL, Charter, and Non-Revenue classifications. No pay increases for three (3) years.
- CDL drivers will lose over $3,000 during the life of the CBA.
- Guarantees were frozen for the life of the contract.
- Received one (1) less floating holiday than the NRT non-union locations.
- 7D, Restrictive drivers, and Monitors received modest 2.5% – 3.0% increases over the life of the contract.
Due to union dues and initiation fees, employees in frozen classifications are making less money than they were prior to the CBA being agreed upon. Any additional increases received were mitigated due to having to now pay union dues.
NRT – Framingham
- CDL Drivers are making $1.00 less per hour than the other NRT non-union locations.
- It is estimated that CDL drivers will lose over $5,000 during the life of the CBA.
- Guarantees were frozen for the life of the contract.
- The non-revenue rate of pay is frozen for the life of the contract.
- Received one (1) less floating holiday than the NRT non-union locations.
- Charter, Yard/Snow Teams received no pay increase in the first year, with a modest 2.25% – 2.5% the following years.
- The company agreed that the monitors at Framingham were below market, and as such agreed to move them to $20 per hour with modest annual pay increases of 2.25% and 2.5%.
Due to union dues and initiation fees, employees in frozen classifications are making less money than they were prior to the CBA being agreed upon.
Understand that there are no guarantees when it comes to the Collective Bargaining process. The union will make big promises; however, at the end of the day you may find out that the reality is much different.
